The Dallas Cowboys are one of the clear winners at the conclusion of the first round last night, according to ESPN's draft analyst Mel Kiper. First, taking Ohio St. safety/nickel cornerback Caleb Downs after trading up one spot with the Miami Dolphins to secure the 11th pick. The Cowboys would later add UFC edge rusher Malachi Lawrence after trading back from the 20th pick with the Philadelphia Eagles, who owned the 23rd pick.
The addition of Downs completely reshapes the depth chart of the Dallas secondary on two fronts. Downs gives the Cowboys an immediate starter at the nickleback position. Bumping the current nickel, Reddy Stewart out of the current starter position, and putting cornerback Zion Childress's spot on the roster in jeopardy. Downs may affect the safety position as well, depending on how Dallas plans to manipulate this roster.
The safeties currently starting on the Cowboys' depth chart are Jalen Thompson, Malik Hooker, and free agent P.J Locke's roster spots from the outside looking in seem secure. But Markquese Bell, Julius Wood, and Alijah Clark, not so much, and could find themselves battling it out for two spots. It'll be interesting to see how Dallas decides to build out this secondary now that Downs is in the fold.
Moving on to the edge rusher position, the addition of Lawrence is more straightforward in terms of how he impacts this depth chart. The current starters, Rashan Gary and Donovan Ezeiruaku, are safe, but the Cowboys will more than likely rotate Lawrence and Ezeiruaku during the season. The rest of the group, outside of Sam Williams and James Houston, could see themselves on the bubble.
The coaches in Dallas will have to decide between Adedayo Odeleye, Isaiah Land, and converted linebacker Marist Liufau to round out the outside linebacker group. Liufau, in particular, will need to hit the ground running with this being his first season playing the position. He's already at a disadvantage and won't have a lot of time to make an impression on this coaching staff.
Overall, the additions of Downs and Lawrence are going to change the look of this Cowboys roster from top to bottom at their positions. Both will come in and push players lower on the depth chart off the team, while also taking spots of established players.
