The Barrington Eagles delivered a statement performance on Thursday night, handing La Salle its first loss of the season in a thrilling Division I boys volleyball showdown. The Eagles swept the Rams 26-24, 26-24, 25-22 at the McLaughlin Athletic Center in Providence, proving they are a force to be reckoned with as the playoffs approach.
Donovan Park led the charge with a game-high 20 kills, while Calvin Oberacker added 10 kills, including the decisive final swing. Setter Logan Lane orchestrated the offense with 36 assists, chipped in 12 digs, and contributed to the blocking effort, showcasing the team's all-around depth. "That's the best we've played this season," Lane said. "I think that's the most like a team we've been this season."
Barrington set the tone early by rallying from a 20-15 deficit in the first set. They saved a set point at 24-23 with a kill from David Stewart, then capitalized on two La Salle errors, including a net violation at 25-24, to steal the opener. The Eagles repeated the formula in the second set, winning the final three points to secure another 26-24 victory. In the third set, they protected their lead down the stretch to close out the sweep.
La Salle's only prior defeat came against out-of-state opponent Needham (Mass.), making this a significant result for Barrington. The Eagles have now won four straight matches after earlier losses to Coventry and Cranston East, peaking at the perfect time. "It'll keep pushing us through the rest of the season," Park said. "Because our aim is the D-I state championship – I really think this will carry us through the rest of the season."
With the playoffs just days away, Barrington has sent a clear message that the Rams are beatable, giving hope to the rest of the field – and confidence to themselves.
