In a game that showcased the very best of high school softball, the Westville Tigers found themselves on the wrong side of history on Tuesday. Despite a gutsy performance from senior pitcher Lilly Kiesel, the Tigers fell 1-0 to Champaign Central, as Maroons' star Haley Helm delivered a masterclass in the circle and at the plate.
Westville coach Brandon Zaayer was honest with his team before the first pitch, admitting he didn't know how the game would unfold. "I told Lilly, 'I don't know if you're going to make it one inning or seven. We're just going to play it batter by batter,'" Zaayer said. "Hats off to Haley. She's one of the best pitchers in the nation, let alone Illinois. The girls competed. I'm not disappointed in the loss—it was a good game, and that's all I can ask for."
On any other day, Kiesel's line would have been enough to secure a win. She tossed seven innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out batters with precision. But on this day, she was matched against Helm, Central's junior phenom who struck out 11 batters over seven scoreless innings, surrendering only two hits, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch.
The game's only run came in the fifth inning, when Helm herself stepped into the batter's box and launched a solo home run over the fence. It was the kind of moment that defines a season—a pitcher who dominates from the rubber and delivers the decisive blow with her bat.
Central coach Justice Miller couldn't hide her admiration for Helm's impact. "She's so talented, but her focus and drive to be the best she can be for her team is amazing," Miller said. "Her team has stood behind her and played really solid defense for her all season. It's been really great watching them continue to grow every game. They play together really well, and they have each other's backs all the time. It's been a really special season so far."
For the Maroons (26-4-1), this win was more than just another notch in the win column. It was a continuation of a historic run that began last season, when Central set a single-season program record with 25 wins and captured their first regional championship since 1981. This year, the milestones keep coming. A 9-3 victory over Peoria Notre Dame on Saturday completed a perfect 9-0 Big 12 Conference season, giving the program its first-ever conference title. Tuesday's win over Westville (19-4) pushed their win total to 26—another program record.
When asked about the key to this unprecedented success, Helm pointed to one thing: trust. "Just trusting each other—no matter where you are on the field, you have to trust everybody," she said. "No matter where we are in the lineup, everybody's hitting. No matter where we are in the field, everybody's making plays. Everybody is doing their job, and it's really helping us out. I've never had this much fun playing on a team before, and it's more special to be able to play with my friends these last few years."
For softball fans, this is the kind of story that makes the sport special—a team on a historic run, a pitcher who can dominate in every phase of the game, and a group of players who are making memories that will last a lifetime. Whether you're wearing your team's colors in the stands or representing your own squad on the field, games like this remind us why we love the game.
