Porsche Penske Motorsport is shaking up its driver lineup for the 2027 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season, and it's a move that signals both a passing of the torch and a strategic pivot. Rising star Laurin Heinrich will step into a full-time seat behind the wheel of one of the team's factory Porsche 963s, while veteran Laurens Vanthoor transitions to an endurance-only role.

The 24-year-old Heinrich is riding a wave of momentum after a breathtaking performance at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca last Sunday. In a furious charge that included a last-lap pass, he delivered JDC-Miller MotorSports its first-ever Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) win as a privateer—a historic moment for the series. Earlier this year, Heinrich also claimed victories in the #7 PPM Porsche 963 alongside Julien Andlauer and Felipe Nasr at Daytona and Sebring, and he currently leads the championship standings. However, his title hopes face a potential hiccup: he'll miss the endurance round at Watkins Glen due to a scheduling conflict with the 24 Hours of Spa.

"Porsche has played a fundamental role in my racing career right from the start," Heinrich said. "I therefore feel a strong connection to the company and am delighted to be competing for the IMSA title with Porsche Penske Motorsport in 2027."

For the 34-year-old Vanthoor, the reduced schedule is a welcome change. The Belgian, who currently co-drives with Kevin Estre in the #6 Porsche 963, is also expected to be announced soon as part of McLaren's Hypercar program in the FIA World Endurance Championship next year. This dual opportunity allows him to pursue fresh challenges while still contributing to Porsche's endurance efforts.

"My journey as a Porsche factory driver has brought me tremendous success over the past ten years, and I am very grateful for that," said Vanthoor. "Together, we want to win more trophies and titles. Nevertheless, I personally have a big dream that I would like to pursue. At the same time, I am very happy for Laurin Heinrich that he will be joining the permanent IMSA roster at Porsche Penske Motorsport in 2027. He absolutely deserves this opportunity."

This role swap marks a significant moment for Porsche Penske Motorsport, blending youthful ambition with seasoned experience. For fans of the brand, it's a glimpse into the future—and a reminder that even in the high-speed world of endurance racing, the next generation is always ready to take the wheel.
