Heim drives in 5 runs to help Braves beat Rockies 11-6 in Strider's return

Jonah Heim homered, doubled and drove in five runs, Jorge Mateo also hit a home run and the Atlanta Braves beat the Colorado Rockies 11-6 on Sunday. Spencer Strider made his season debut for the Braves and allowed three runs and four hits in 3 1/3 innings in his return from an oblique injury suffered in spring training. Aaron Bummer (1-1) came on in relief of Strider and gave up two runs in one inning while earning the win.

In a thrilling Sunday showdown at Coors Field, the Atlanta Braves erupted for an 11-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies, powered by a five-RBI performance from Jonah Heim. The catcher went deep, doubled, and drove in runs at key moments, while Jorge Mateo also left the yard to fuel the Braves' offensive explosion.

The game marked the highly anticipated season debut of Braves ace Spencer Strider, who had been sidelined since spring training with an oblique injury. While Strider showed flashes of his electric stuff—striking out six batters—he struggled with command, walking five and allowing three runs on four hits over 3 1/3 innings. It was a gritty return for the right-hander, who clearly has some rust to shake off.

Aaron Bummer (1-1) relieved Strider and, despite surrendering two runs in one inning, was credited with the win as the Braves' bats took over.

Atlanta entered the game without superstar right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr., who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hamstring. But the Braves showed they have depth to spare. Austin Riley delivered a bases-loaded RBI single, Eli White worked a walk to force in a run, and Matt Olson scored on Heim's sacrifice fly during a three-run fifth inning that turned a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 lead.

Rockies starter Kyle Freeland (1-3) labored through 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Colorado got a boost from Mickey Moniak, who crushed two home runs—a solo shot in the fourth and a two-run blast in the eighth—and TJ Rumfield went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs.

The game started with a flash of small ball as Edouard Julien walked, stole second, and scored on Rumfield's two-out single for a 1-0 Rockies lead. But Atlanta answered quickly in the second: Olson doubled, and after two strikeouts, Heim launched a 425-foot moonshot to center field. Mateo followed by depositing the next pitch 405 feet over the left-field wall, giving the Braves a 3-1 edge.

Rumfield's leadoff homer in the third cut the lead to one, and after Jake McCarthy tripled to start the fourth, Moniak's two-run blast off Bummer put Colorado ahead 4-3. But the Braves' resilient lineup responded immediately in the fifth, reclaiming the lead for good.

Looking ahead, the Rockies will send right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano (3-1, 2.84 ERA) to the mound Monday against the New York Mets. The Braves, meanwhile, travel to Seattle where righty JR Ritchie (1-0, 2.92) will face Mariners ace Logan Gilbert (1-3, 4.03).
