The race for Bundesliga survival is going down to the wire, and Heidenheim are still very much in the fight. A crucial 3-1 victory over Cologne on Sunday has kept their top-flight hopes alive, setting up a dramatic final day of the season.
With just one match left to play, the bottom three—VfL Wolfsburg, Heidenheim, and St. Pauli—are all locked on 26 points. It's a three-way battle for 16th place, which earns a spot in the relegation/promotion playoff. Wolfsburg currently hold that position, but it's anyone's game. The final matchday will see Wolfsburg travel to St. Pauli in a direct duel, while Heidenheim host Mainz.
Sunday's match in Cologne was a rollercoaster from the start. Jan Schöppner gave Heidenheim the lead in the 8th minute, but Cologne's Marius Bülter leveled the score just two minutes later. The visitors didn't let the setback rattle them. Arijon Ibrahimović restored the lead in the 28th minute, and Schöppner sealed the deal with his second goal of the game in the 72nd, securing three massive points for the underdogs.
Elsewhere, Freiburg are still in control of their own destiny but were made to wait for their European aspirations. A 3-2 defeat at SV Hamburg kept them in the Conference League qualification spot with 44 points, but they're being closely pursued by Eintracht Frankfurt and Augsburg, both just one point behind. Freiburg also have a Europa League final on the horizon, and if they beat Aston Villa on May 20, they'll qualify for the Champions League—opening up the Conference League spot for another team.
Hamburg, already safe from relegation, broke the deadlock early through Bakery Jatta, but Freiburg hit back almost immediately via Igor Matanović. Hamburg regained the lead in the 64th minute with a powerful free-kick from Luka Vušković, and Fabio Balde added a third just three minutes later. Matanović completed a late brace in the 87th, but Freiburg couldn't find an equalizer. Hamburg coach Merlin Polzin praised his team's grit: "We knew today wouldn't be an easy game as Freiburg demand everything from their opponents. The way the lads tackled this tough challenge today is truly commendable."
