It was a night of dominance for Isaiah Magdaleno, who delivered a performance for the ages in Hawaii's 1-0 shutout win over UC Riverside. The junior right-hander was nearly untouchable, striking out a career-high 16 batters and allowing just one hit in a complete-game gem that had the crowd of 2,380 on its feet at Les Murakami Stadium.

Magdaleno carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning, but UC Riverside's David Whittle broke it up with a chopper over third baseman Tate Shimao's outstretched glove. Shortstop Taylor Takata made a valiant effort, but his long throw was just late to first base. After a quick mound visit from head coach Rich Hill, Magdaleno calmly regrouped, striking out Andrew Rivas to seal the victory with an exclamation point.

"He told me to calm down and reset," Magdaleno said of Hill's visit. "The no-hitter was gone, but I still had a job to do."

The win couldn't have come at a better time for the Rainbow Warriors (22-19, 11-11 Big West), who are fighting for a spot in the Big West Tournament. Only the top five teams qualify, and Hawaii currently sits in fifth place. Hill has dubbed this stretch "winning time," and his ace answered the call in a big way.

Just a week earlier, Magdaleno was on a 60-pitch limit against No. 6 Oregon State, exiting in the third inning after allowing six runs. That abbreviated outing, while frustrating at the time, turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

"It kept him well-rested for this one," said pitching coach Keith Zuniga. "Because this is what matters."

Magdaleno's preparation was meticulous. He studied video and scouting reports of the Highlanders, hit the weight room hard, and stuck to his pregame ritual: L&L barbecue chicken and two eggs. Catcher Jake Redding noticed the difference right away.

"I knew from the get-go Isaiah was going to have a good day," Redding said. "His catch play and his bullpen session before the game, there was so much intent behind it. It just looked a little different from what I'd seen in the past."

Magdaleno was in control from the first pitch, striking out two in the opening frame and three in the second. He had every pitch working: a 91 mph four-seam fastball, a changeup, curve, cutter, slider, and even a sinker he'd rarely used before. Through the first seven innings, he threw first-pitch strikes to 16 of 22 batters, keeping the Highlanders off balance all night.

"I was able to stay calm, cool and collected between pitches — and throw strikes," Magdaleno said.

Zuniga praised his ace's ability to drop a changeup into the zone for an early strike, then bounce it in a pitcher's count to induce swings and misses. It was a masterclass in pitching, and the second complete game by a Rainbow Warrior in Hill's 251 games at the helm.

For Hawaii, it was more than just a win — it was a statement. With the postseason on the line, Magdaleno delivered the kind of performance that can define a season. And for the fans watching, it was a reminder that when the stakes are highest, the best players find a way to rise to the occasion.
