Hawai'i's Isaiah Magdaleno is on an absolute tear, and the Big West Conference is taking notice. For the second consecutive week, the Rainbow Warriors' right-handed junior has been named the Big West Pitcher of the Week, marking his third such honor this season.
Magdaleno's dominance on the mound has been nothing short of spectacular. Just a week after tossing a one-hit, 16-strikeout shutout against UC Riverside on May 1, the Los Angeles native delivered another gem last Friday. In a 4-1 victory over UC Davis, he allowed just one run and four hits over eight innings, fanning nine batters along the way.
"Just trying to get back into the groove week by week," Magdaleno said, crediting his preparation routine. "Obviously, confidence plays a factor, too." His approach combines in-depth video studies, scouting reports, and weight training with a devastating arsenal that includes 92 mph fastballs and changeups that keep hitters guessing in every direction.
The timing couldn't be better for the Rainbow Warriors, who are in the midst of a crucial stretch. They need just one win in their three-game series against Cal State Northridge to secure a spot in next week's five-team Big West Tournament in Irvine, California. The series was moved up two days to accommodate UH's commencement ceremonies, adding an extra layer of urgency.
Magdaleno is expected to take the mound in Wednesday's series opener. If Hawai'i secures its tournament berth, the ace will have a full week of rest heading into postseason play—a scenario that has Rainbow Warriors fans feeling confident about their chances.
