Borussia Dortmund's future is looking bright, and it might already be taking shape in the form of 18-year-old Samuele Inácio. The young Italian attacking midfielder made his third consecutive start for the Black and Yellows in Friday's thrilling 3–2 Bundesliga victory over Eintracht Frankfurt—and he even opened his goal-scoring account for the club.
Inácio lined up alongside veteran Julian Brandt, who was making what is expected to be his final home appearance at Signal Iduna Park before departing as a free agent this summer. With Brandt's exit looming, many assumed Dortmund would be in the market for a high-profile replacement. But after Inácio's recent performances, head coach Niko Kovač hinted that the solution might already be in the squad.
"I think we have already seen a small generational change," Kovač said post-match, as reported by Bild. "He could perhaps one day become Jule's replacement. Big shoes to fill, but the youngster is only 18 and Jule is now 30."
Dortmund's front office is singing a similar tune. Managing director for sport Lars Ricken praised Inácio's rapid rise, noting, "He has started three games in a row and also played through the last two matches. We must not unnecessarily place too much burden on him, but of course it is an indication for next season." Sporting director Ole Book added, "We will not block his path and will give him every opportunity to earn a good position for himself."
With contract extension talks reportedly underway—aiming to keep Inácio at the club until 2030 or 2031—Dortmund fans have every reason to be excited. While Brandt's departure will leave a gap, the club's faith in this talented teenager suggests the next chapter of BVB's attacking midfield might already be written.
