The defending Class 2A champions are feeling the pressure. In a tense playoff opener Friday night, the Hatley Tigers delivered a statement, edging East Union 4-2 to seize control of the series. Pitcher Koltan Brown was the story, delivering a masterful six-inning performance, allowing just two runs to put the Urchins on the brink.
"We beat a really good baseball team today," said Hatley coach Seth Lee. "Koltan Brown did an awesome job on the mound tonight. Probably the best he’s had all season."
After a scoreless start, Hatley's offense ignited in the third inning. Carson Armstrong sparked the rally with a double, followed by a Cooper Crenshaw single. The Tigers capitalized with three runs, courtesy of a sacrifice fly and key RBI singles from Brody Sloan and Bryson Wilson.
"It took a little bit to get the bats hot," Lee admitted. "We got people on base, but just couldn't get them through. We had a couple of good innings, got their pitch count up, and thought we had a pretty good night there."
Bryson Wilson struck again in the fifth with another RBI single, extending the lead to 4-0. On the mound, Brown was in command, keeping East Union off the board through five innings with a pitch-to-contact approach. "Just let them hit it," Brown said. "Just wanted them to put it in play and get an out."
East Union mounted a late charge, scoring twice in the sixth and bringing the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but the comeback fell short. "He kept us off-balance," said Urchins coach Zane Treadaway. "We were having trouble squaring him up. They got some big hits, and we just didn't come through when we should have."
Coach Lee emphasized the strategic benefit of Brown's efficient outing: "His stuff was so good, and he kept getting quick outs. His pitch count was low, so we left him in. Now we've got more pitchers to work with for the rest of the series."
