Has much-maligned Gyokeres proved his critics wrong?

The talk before the season was that Arsenal needed a 20-goal-a-season striker to win a trophy - and now they finally have one in Viktor Gyokeres.

When Arsenal kicked off the season, the narrative was clear: to finally end their trophy drought, they needed a striker capable of netting 20 goals a season. Enter Viktor Gyokeres, the Swedish sharpshooter who has silenced his doubters in spectacular fashion.

With 21 goals across all competitions this campaign, Gyokeres has delivered exactly what the Gunners needed. His brace in Arsenal's commanding 3-0 victory over Fulham not only extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to six points but also proved his worth as a game-changer.

The path to this moment wasn't easy. Arsenal invested around £64 million last summer to bring Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, where he had an astonishing record of 97 goals in 102 appearances. As a "win now" signing, the pressure was immense from day one.

Critics had plenty to say throughout the season, questioning his all-around contribution to the team's play. But Gyokeres has let his goals do the talking. After converting a crucial penalty in the Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid midweek, he followed up with two more in a pivotal title race clash—proving that when the stakes are highest, he delivers.

Interestingly, Gyokeres' 20th goal of the season made history: he became the first Arsenal player to reach that milestone in their debut campaign since Alexis Sanchez in 2014-15, who finished with 25 goals. It's company worth keeping.

Saturday's performance was particularly special—it marked the first time Gyokeres contributed both a goal and an assist in the first half of a league match since joining the club. His manager Mikel Arteta couldn't hide his satisfaction: "He had a great performance. In Madrid, especially the first half, he was really good. Today, every attacking action he was involved in—he scored two great goals. Position-wise, timing-wise, it's something we've been working on."

While some may still question his overall game, one thing is certain: if Gyokeres' goals fire Arsenal to Premier League glory, the criticism will be nothing more than a footnote in a championship story.
