HARTSELLE, Ala. — In a thrilling showdown that had all the drama of a classic rivalry, Hartselle emerged victorious over Athens 14-7 Tuesday night to claim the Class 6A, Area 15 championship. It was a hard-fought battle that showcased the resilience and firepower of the Tigers, who refused to back down after dropping the first game of the area finals.
The Tigers came roaring back in the winner-take-all game, immediately seizing control with a four-run first inning and then piling on six more in the second. It was a statement of intent from a team that knows how to rise to the occasion when it matters most. Hatsumi Peterson led the offensive charge with three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs, while Aubree Peak contributed three hits and two RBIs. Katie Norgard also made her presence felt with two hits and three RBIs, powering Hartselle to the title.
Athens put up a fight, with Kara Crews leading the Golden Eagles with three hits and an RBI. Paisley Howell added two hits and two RBIs, while Caitlyn Tedford and Linsley Gillman each chipped in with two hits and an RBI. But it wasn't enough to stop the Tigers' momentum.
The road to the championship wasn't easy for Hartselle. In the first game of the area finals, Athens held on for an 8-6 win, forcing the decisive matchup. It was a game of déjà vu for Athens, who had seen a three-run lead slip away the night before. This time, the Golden Eagles managed to hold off a late Hartselle rally, thanks to stellar pitching from Lexie Thornton, who kept the Tigers scoreless through five innings and limited them to just two runs through six.
"Something crazy always happens in an Athens and Hartselle game, but our girls did a great job of battling through adversity," said Athens head coach Chuck Smith. "We've faced a tough schedule this year, and I have confidence in our girls, and they have confidence in themselves."
Abby Lopez led Athens with three hits, while Rayne Brewer added a two-run home run. Thornton also contributed two hits and an RBI. For Hartselle, Aubree Peak was a standout with two home runs and six RBIs, keeping the Tigers in the game.
Hartselle head coach Anna Hanners praised her team's late-game rally but acknowledged the need for a faster start. "We stopped hitting fly balls. We actually hit ground balls, line drives, got on base and started scoring runs. If we can keep that up in the next game, then I believe 100% we can win," she said.
Athens earned their spot in the area finals with a dramatic 8-7 win over Muscle Shoals, thanks to a walk-off single by Caitlyn Tedford. Tedford finished with two RBIs, while Paisley Howell led the Golden Eagles with four hits. Jazz Davis also added two hits in the victory.
For Hartselle, the championship is a testament to their grit and determination. Whether you're a fan of the Tigers or just love a good comeback story, this game had everything—power hitting, clutch pitching, and the kind of intensity that makes high school sports unforgettable.
