May 1—HARTSELLE — Hartselle took care of business Thursday night, sweeping Cullman in the second round of the Class 6A baseball playoffs. Hartselle delivered a statement performance Thursday night, sweeping Cullman in the second round of the Class 6A baseball playoffs and punching their ticket to the next stage of postseason action.

The No. 5 Tigers showed grit and firepower, taking Game 1 in dramatic walk-off fashion, 5-4, before cruising to an 8-1 victory in Game 2 to close out the series against the No. 3 Bearcats.

"That first game was huge," said Hartselle head coach Brad Phillips. "I knew whoever lost would have to battle through so much adversity. It's tough to bounce back from a loss like that. We came out swinging in Game 2, landed another big blow early, and you could see it take the air out of them. Cullman is a first-class program and a really talented team, so this is a big win for us."

The Tigers now hit the road for the first time this postseason, set to face the winner of Mountain Brook vs. Pell City in the third round. Despite the travel, Phillips is confident his squad is ready for the challenge.

"We're going to enjoy having another week together," he said. "But we spent the first half of our schedule on the road, so we feel like that's prepared us for what's ahead."

Game 1: Hartselle 5, Cullman 4 (8 innings)

Cain Falciani has a knack for rising to the occasion. Just months after hauling in a last-second touchdown catch to lead Hartselle football past Jasper, the two-sport star delivered again on the diamond. This time, it was a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning that gave the Tigers a walk-off win over their rivals.

"I feel like I lock in more when the game's on the line," Falciani said. "I wouldn't have been in that spot if my teammates hadn't set me up, so I knew I couldn't let them down."

Falciani admitted the stakes made this moment even sweeter than his football heroics. "This one's better because it's the playoffs and because I hate Cullman," he said with a grin. "We're Hartselle. We have to beat them."

But the Tigers wouldn't have been in position to win without senior Cruise Baker, who tied the game not once but twice. Baker crushed a two-RBI double in the fifth inning and followed it with a solo home run in the seventh to force extra innings.

"He threw me a curveball low and away, then came with a fastball," Baker said. "I knew I'd get a good pitch in that count, and I was ready."

Carter Lee added two hits, and Carson Stancil provided steady production as the Tigers clawed back from deficits to keep their season alive.

Game 2: Hartselle 8, Cullman 1

With momentum firmly on their side, the Tigers wasted no time putting Game 2 out of reach. Hartselle jumped out early, piling on runs and letting their pitching and defense take control. The result was a dominant series-clinching win that showcased the depth and resilience of a team peaking at the perfect time.

As the Tigers prepare for the third round, they carry with them the confidence of a squad that has already stared down adversity and come out swinging.
