Manchester United's defensive plans have taken another hit, with Harry Maguire now ruled out of Saturday's crucial Premier League clash against Chelsea. The FA has upheld an additional one-game suspension for the defender, extending his absence.

The ban stems from an incident following his red card in last month's 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. Maguire was dismissed for denying a goalscoring opportunity, a decision that frustrated manager Michael Carrick, who felt a similar incident went unpunished at the other end. The FA charge, related to alleged improper conduct towards the fourth official after the sending-off, has now been confirmed.

Maguire already served the initial one-match ban during Monday's disappointing home defeat to Leeds United. That game was itself marred by controversy, with United aggrieved over decisions in the build-up to Leeds's first goal and the subsequent sending-off of Lisandro Martínez.

This latest setback compounds United's defensive crisis. With Maguire suspended and Martínez also likely out, the spotlight will fall on the likes of Leny Yoro and potentially Ayden Heaven to step up at Stamford Bridge. The result of this high-stakes match could have significant implications for the fiercely contested race for Champions League qualification.
