In a gripping display of last-wicket resilience, Simon Harmer and Jamie Porter pulled off a remarkable heist for Essex, snatching an unlikely first-innings lead against Hampshire in the County Championship at Chelmsford. The duo, who previously saved a surreal draw against Yorkshire with similar heroics last season, stitched together an 81-run partnership in 21 overs to give Essex a 38-run advantage.

Coming together at a precarious 192-9, still 43 runs behind, Harmer and Porter nearly broke a 96-year-old club record for the last wicket against Hampshire. Harmer's unbeaten 80 off 118 balls was a masterclass in farming the strike, expertly shielding Porter—a classic number 11—who faced just 38 balls for his dozen runs. The pair repeatedly snagged singles off the fifth ball of each over, frustrating Hampshire's bowlers until James Fuller finally ended the stand by knocking over Porter's middle stump for his ninth career five-wicket haul.

Earlier, Wiaan Mulder scored his first half-century for Essex, also crossing the 10,000-run milestone in professional cricket. But the drama didn't stop there. In the evening session, Hampshire clawed back into the contest, closing at 58-2, 20 runs ahead, thanks largely to Nick Gubbins' watchful, unbeaten 35. However, the bottom-of-the-table side lost early wickets, highlighting their troubled start to the season. Toby Albert fell for just a single, edging Sam Cook behind, and Tom Prest followed soon after for one, both dismissed by the same bowler-wicketkeeper combination.

On a brighter note for Hampshire, Fuller struck twice in his first two overs of the morning, adding to his overnight wicket of Dean Elgar. He beat Cook for pace, sending his off-stump cartwheeling, and then induced a faint tickle from Charlie Allison. But Harmer and Porter's defiant stand ensured Essex left the field with parity—and a story that will be remembered for seasons to come.
