Barcelona's title celebrations may have been put on ice after a 1-0 defeat to Alaves at Mendizorroza, but not all was lost for Hansi Flick's side. In their first match since clinching the La Liga crown, the Catalans saw their impressive 11-match winning streak snapped by Ibrahim Diabate's first-half stoppage-time strike.
Despite the setback, head coach Hansi Flick found reasons to be optimistic. Speaking in his post-match press conference, the German tactician explained his decision to rotate heavily—making eight changes from the team that conquered Real Madrid in El Clasico. "We wanted to give minutes to the players who had played less," Flick said. "In the first half, we controlled the game but it was not an easy night. They are fighting for survival and it is normal."
While the defeat dashed Barcelona's hopes of finishing the season with a perfect 100 points, Flick was quick to highlight the silver lining. "I'm disappointed not to reach 100 points, but we have to accept it. I've told the players that I've seen things that I liked," he added.
One of those bright spots was the debut of 18-year-old defender Alvaro Cortes, who turned heads with a composed performance. The young full-back's confidence on the ball caught Flick's eye, and the manager was eager to praise the La Masia product. "It was his first game. I saw him with confidence on the ball. He has made his debut because of how he trains. That's what I want to see from the Barça Atlètic players—that they give their all in training with the first team and play well in the reserve team. I like what I had seen and that's why he played."
Flick also gave a nod to Wojciech Szczesny, who made his first start in over six months between the posts. The Polish international was brought in to give regular starter Joan Garcia a well-earned rest after a grueling three-game week. "We had three games this week. We decided that Joan would rest, but he will probably play the two remaining games," Flick confirmed.
As Barcelona gear up for their final matches of the season, fans can take heart in the depth and young talent emerging from the squad. Whether it's the promise of debutants like Cortes or the tactical rotations of a manager eyeing the bigger picture, there's plenty to look forward to—even in defeat.
