After a long and frustrating seven-match winless stretch, New York City FC finally found their rhythm—and Hannes Wolf was the man who brought the spark. The Austrian midfielder delivered a stunning hat trick, leading NYCFC to a dominant 3-0 victory over the Columbus Crew at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, snapping a drought that had haunted the team since mid-March.

Wolf wasted no time making his mark. In the 12th minute, he slotted home his third goal of the season off a slick assist from Agustin Ojeda, giving NYCFC an early lead. Just four minutes later, he struck again, this time with help from defender Nico Cavallo—who notched his first career assist in his 18th appearance—to double the advantage. The quick-fire double sent the home crowd into a frenzy and set the tone for a commanding performance.

The hat trick was completed in the 66th minute, with Nicolás Fernández providing the final assist on Wolf's fifth goal of the campaign. It was a milestone moment for Wolf, who now has 20 goals in 78 appearances over three seasons with NYCFC. For Fernández, the three assists were especially sweet—coming after a season that had seen him without a single helper entering the match.

At the other end, goalkeeper Matt Freese was rock-solid, making two saves to earn his second clean sheet of the season in 12 starts. The shutout was the 22nd of his career in 100 starts, a testament to his growing reliability between the posts.

The victory was a much-needed turnaround for NYCFC (4-5-3), who had gone 0-5-2 under head coach Pascal Jansen since beating the Colorado Rapids on March 14. The win vaulted the team from 11th place in the Eastern Conference to seventh, breathing new life into their playoff hopes. However, the victory came at a cost—Alonso Martínez was among seven NYCFC players sidelined with leg injuries, highlighting the depth challenges the squad continues to face.

For Columbus (3-6-3), the loss marked another tough outing on the road, where they now sit at 1-4-1 in their first season under head coach Henrik Rydström. Goalkeeper Patrick Schulte did his best to keep the Crew in the match, turning away three shots, but the offense couldn't find a way past Freese.

Both teams now turn their attention to midweek action. NYCFC will look to build on this momentum, while Columbus faces a quick turnaround as they visit the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday.
