The stage is set for a thrilling Schuylkill League Championship showdown this Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Pine Grove's Walter Stump Stadium, as Tri-Valley and Blue Mountain prepare for their third clash of the season. Both teams have been dominant, and this rubber match promises to be a classic.
Tri-Valley (17-4) returns to the championship game for the second consecutive year, looking to avenge last season's loss to Tamaqua. The Bulldogs are riding an impressive nine-game winning streak, and they've already swept Blue Mountain (18-4) during the regular season. Coach Brent Smith knows what's at stake: "It'd be huge for all the work and determination these seniors have put in, so to come away with that would be awesome."
Blue Mountain, however, isn't backing down. Coach Jarrod Kramer is confident his team can flip the script: "It's tough to beat a good team three times. It'll be fun and we'll give it our best shot." The Eagles finished as the top two teams in Division I alongside Tri-Valley, with the Bulldogs claiming the division crown with a 10-2 league record.
Both teams bring momentum from commanding semifinal wins. Tri-Valley powered past Williams Valley 14-5, fueled by an eight-run first inning. Owen Miller and Peyton Schley each drove in three runs, while Schley earned the win on the mound, allowing just one run over five innings with four strikeouts. "It was key to get on top early for the momentum," Schley said. "It's a big part of the lineup for guys to get on at the bottom, and we can get hit in and run the bases."
Blue Mountain answered with a 12-3 victory over Marian Catholic, led by Riley Sebastian's dominant pitching performance. Sebastian went six innings, allowing three runs and striking out 11. "I just kept going out there and dealing," Sebastian said. "These guys have my back all the time at the plate." Sonny Amato and Evan Setlock each had four hits to power the Eagles' lineup.
Their regular-season matchups were tightly contested. Tri-Valley won the first meeting 7-1 on March 31, thanks to Gavin Klock's three-run home run and Braeden Doyle's six strong innings on the mound. The second game was even closer, with the Bulldogs scoring two runs in the top of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie and hold on for a 6-5 win.
With stellar pitching and efficient offense on both sides, this championship game has all the ingredients for a memorable night. Tri-Valley has outscored opponents 168-67 this season, while Blue Mountain has been equally impressive. As Schley noted, a league title would provide "a lot of momentum going to districts" and prove they "can compete with anyone."
