Temperatures were rising and so were the stakes at Carrington Golf Club, where the Monroe County Golf Championships delivered all the drama and precision you'd expect from a top-tier high school showdown. Leading the charge was Bedford senior Taleon Guess, who proved once again that he thrives under pressure—capturing his third Monroe County title and steering his team to a repeat championship.
"I always get nervous, but it's a good kind of nerves," Guess said, showing the calm confidence that has become his trademark. That poise paid off in a stellar 2-under-par 70, a round that featured just two bogeys, three birdies, and an unforgettable eagle on the 470-yard 13th hole. A booming drive followed by a pinpoint 8-iron set him up for a tap-in that electrified the gallery. "I hit the ball really good today, but missed a lot of putts," he admitted. "I finished strong, though—I was 5-under on the last six holes."
Guess wasn't just playing for personal glory. His performance anchored Bedford's team score of 312, a full 10 strokes ahead of second-place Airport. Ida grabbed third with 336, followed by Flat Rock (337), Monroe (338), and a tightly packed field that included Gibraltar Carlson, Erie Mason, St. Mary Catholic Central, New Boston Huron, Whiteford, Jefferson, Summerfield, Dundee, and Milan.
Bedford coach Brad Reed praised his star player's ability to rise to the occasion. "He just rises to the occasion. He likes playing in big matches," Reed said. "We played pretty well—312 is a pretty good score. It's close to our best." But Reed knows the road ahead requires even sharper execution. "We left some shots out there. We've got a few little things to take care of. We had too many three putts."
Joining Guess on the All-County Team were teammates Hussein Salami and Oakley Morrow, both carding 80, and Connor Urbanski with an 82—a solid core that has Bedford eyeing a deep postseason run. "We've won back-to-back now," Reed added. "That really motivates them."
Individually, Ida's Connor Zimmerman posted the best score among non-Bedford players, while the entire field showcased the depth of talent in Monroe County golf. For Guess, the victory is more than just another trophy. "These are guys I've played with for a long time," he said. "It's really something I look forward to."
As the Mules set their sights on regionals and beyond, one thing is clear: when the pressure is on, Guess and Bedford know exactly how to answer the call.
