In a controversial turn of events, Guernsey FC has been stripped of home advantage for their upcoming Southern Combination Premier Division play-off final, a decision the club says they are considering appealing.
The Green Lions, who earned a third-place finish in the league standings, were originally set to host fifth-placed Peacehaven and Telscombe on Sunday, May 10, for a chance to climb into the eighth tier of English football. However, the fixture date now clashes with Guernsey's annual Liberation Day celebrations, creating logistical headaches as busy flight schedules make it difficult for the visiting team to travel to the island.
As a result, the decisive match has been moved to the English mainland, now scheduled for either Tuesday, May 12, or Wednesday, May 13.
"The right to home advantage was earned on merit through a third-place league finish and victory in our semi-final," Guernsey FC said in a strongly worded statement. "The removal of the opportunity to host what would have been a major occasion, in front of a large crowd, undermines the integrity of the competition and is a position the club does not accept."
The club expressed deep frustration over the late decision, highlighting the impact on fans who had already made travel and accommodation plans in good faith. "Our primary concern is for the substantial number of supporters from both clubs who have already committed significant financial resources based on the original confirmation," the statement continued. "This late and unexpected decision has not been given due consideration by the league."
Adding to the scheduling puzzle, the following weekend is off the table as Guernsey's representative side is set to face Jersey in the Muratti Vase final on Saturday, May 16. The Green Lions earned their play-off spot with a commanding 3-0 victory over Horsham YM in their semi-final last Saturday, powered by a double from Fazakerley.
This isn't the first time a Channel Island side has faced play-off complications. Last year, Jersey Bulls had to wait until May 28 for their Combined Counties League play-off final after both they and fellow high-fliers Redhill were hit with point deductions for fielding ineligible players.
For now, Guernsey FC is left weighing their options, with the clock ticking on what should have been a historic home match in front of a passionate local crowd.
