Guardians sweep Angels behind Martinez homer and Messick quality start

The Cleveland Guardians are riding high after completing their first series sweep of the season, capped off by a crisp 4-2 victory in a day game that had fans on their feet. It wasn't just any win—it was a statement that this team knows how to close out a series with style.

On the mound, Doug Messick delivered a quality start that kept the Guardians in control, even if he wasn't at his sharpest. Over 6.2 innings, he scattered four hits, struck out seven, and walked three, allowing just two runs. Those runs came on a Zach Neto two-run homer in the fifth inning, which briefly tightened the game. But Messick's ability to battle through and hand it to the bullpen was exactly what the team needed.

The Guardians wasted no time putting runs on the board. In the first inning, Angel Martinez led off with a solo home run, setting the tone for a series where he was simply unstoppable. Over two games, Martinez went 3-for-7 with two homers and three stolen bases—tormenting the Angels at every turn. The lineup kept the pressure on: Jose Ramirez drew a walk, Chase DeLauter singled off the pitcher, and David Fry drove them in with an RBI groundout. In the third, DeLauter added another run with a sacrifice fly to center that he absolutely crushed. Then, in the sixth, Daniel Schneemann tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single, giving the bullpen some breathing room.

And that bullpen? Dominant. After Messick exited with a runner on first in the seventh, Nick Festa came in and got Adam Frazier to ground out, snuffing out any rally. Erik Sabrowski handled the eighth, striking out three in a perfect frame. Then it was Cade Smith's turn in the ninth, and he slammed the door shut with a strikeout of the side to earn the save. Smith has been lights out over the last month, and today was no exception.

It was a relatively uneventful game by the standards of a sweep—no wild comebacks or extra-inning drama—but it ended with a "W" and a series cleanout. That's the kind of baseball that builds momentum.

Next up, the Guardians welcome the Cincinnati Reds this weekend for what promises to be an exciting series. Tanner Bibee is set to take the mound for Cleveland, while the Reds' starter is still to be announced. If the Guardians keep playing this brand of focused, all-around baseball, they'll be a tough team to beat.
