Guardians News and Notes: Guardians Lose a Game They Should Have Won

News and Notes for Sunday, May 10th, 2026

The Cleveland Guardians dropped a heartbreaker to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, falling 2-1 in a game that felt like it was theirs for the taking. The loss leaves fans frustrated, and for good reason—this was one that slipped away.

The Guardians' offense struggled mightily, going just 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. In two separate innings, a simple fly ball to medium-deep outfield—or even a deep ground ball—would have plated the winning run. Against a Twins bullpen that had been struggling, it was a particularly painful performance.

Manager Stephen Vogt's decisions also raised eyebrows. Calling for Angel Martinez to sacrifice bunt against a pitcher who hadn't thrown a single strike yet was head-scratching. Even more puzzling? Not intentionally walking Byron Buxton—the only real threat in the Twins' lineup—in the 11th inning. Buxton made Cleveland pay, and Vogt's move might have saved everyone an extra inning of frustration, but it didn't sit well.

There were bright spots, though. Tanner Bibee was sharp on the mound, and the bullpen held its own, with Peyton Pallette standing out. Both pitchers made just one mistake each, and both times Buxton made them pay—though Bibee's pitch that left the yard might not have even been a mistake.

In roster news, the Guardians addressed their needs by trading for catcher Patrick Bailey, who currently sports a wRC+ of 16. Yes, you read that right. It's a fine move defensively, but don't expect Bailey to suddenly become a star at the plate—Cleveland's hitting development hasn't exactly been a "fixer" of broken bats. The trade likely signals the end of Austin Hedges' time in Cleveland come 2027, which will be a tough goodbye for fans who love his energy and glove work.

Elsewhere in the division, the Royals took down the Tigers, and the White Sox beat the Mariners. The Guardians' Weekly podcast dropped a new episode featuring interviews with David Fry and Rhys Hoskins—worth a listen if you need a break from the on-field frustration.
