Guardians’ Jose Ramirez Reflects on 2016 World Series

Multiple plays from the 2016 World Series stuck out to Jose Ramirez.

Ten years later, the memories are still crystal clear for José Ramírez.

As the 2016 Cleveland team reunited in the outfield before the Guardians' matchup against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday evening, most of the former players were in street clothes. But one man was still in uniform, still playing the game he loves: José Ramírez. Now 33, Ramírez remains one of baseball's elite talents and a perennial MVP candidate—even if the start of the 2026 season hasn't gone exactly as planned.

Looking back at that unforgettable 2016 season, it's remarkable to think Ramírez was just a 23-year-old still finding his footing in the big leagues. Yet he played a pivotal role in Cleveland's postseason run, delivering clutch moments throughout the World Series. When asked recently about that Fall Classic, Ramírez didn't hesitate: he remembers it all.

"I feel like I remember everything. There was not only one thing per se, it was just a bunch of special things for the team," Ramírez said through his interpreter, Auggie Rivero.

Pressed to pick out a few standout moments, Ramírez smiled and recalled the details with precision. "My first AB, a little like chopper to third base with the bases loaded, an RBI. And then that game I had three base hits and then the homer in the other game. So, I kind of remember every little thing that happened during the World Series."

The then-Indians simply wouldn't have reached that stage without Ramírez's bat and glove. A decade later, the same holds true for the Guardians. They still lean on "J-Ram" to be the superstar who can lift them to their full potential.

It's hard to believe the only World Series Ramírez has ever played in was already 10 years ago. At 33, he still has plenty of prime years ahead—and he absolutely deserves another shot at the Fall Classic, another chance to hoist that commissioner's trophy.

Here's hoping the World Series memories José Ramírez holds today won't be the only ones he gets to make.
