The Cleveland Guardians dropped the series finale against the Minnesota Twins 5-4 in a hard-fought Mother's Day matinee at Progressive Field. Despite a gritty effort, the Guardians couldn't overcome a costly fifth inning that ultimately decided the game.

The matinee offered fans their first look at the newest Guardian, Patrick Bailey, who made his debut behind the plate for Cleveland. Batting eighth and catching for Gavin Williams, Bailey showcased why he's highly touted behind the dish—throwing out Trevor Larnach attempting to steal second in the top of the seventh. Meanwhile, bench coach Tony Arnerich stepped in as manager after Stephen Vogt was sidelined due to illness.

Gavin Williams entered the game with a solid 5-2 record and looked sharp early. Through the first four innings, he allowed just one run and was backed by impressive defense, including a slick double play in the top of the fourth to retire the side. But the fifth inning unraveled quickly. Williams surrendered six hits and four runs, turning a manageable game into a 5-0 deficit. He settled down to retire the side in order in the sixth, finishing his day with a final line of 6.0 innings, 10 hits, 5 runs, 1 walk, and 6 strikeouts on 101 pitches.

The Guardians' offense showed fight but struggled to deliver with runners in scoring position—a recurring theme this season. Entering the bottom of the seventh, Cleveland was just 3-for-8 in those situations and left a runner stranded in every inning except the first. They pieced together runs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.

The first run came in the third on three consecutive singles. Brayan Rocchio led off with a base hit to right, followed by a single from Chase DeLauter. José Ramírez then delivered an RBI single to put Cleveland on the board. In the fifth, with two outs, Kyle Manzardo drew a walk and scored on back-to-back singles from Daniel Schneemann and Angel Martínez. Travis Bazzana followed with a walk to load the bases, but Patrick Bailey struck out to end the threat. The sixth inning saw more manufactured offense as Rocchio and DeLauter again strung together back-to-back singles to plate another run.

Franco Aleman made his major league debut just days after being called up, adding a bright spot to the series finale. While the Guardians couldn't complete the comeback, the team showed resilience and flashes of the defensive and offensive potential that make them a dangerous opponent in the AL Central.
