The Cleveland Guardians have made a bold move behind the plate, acquiring two-time Gold Glove-winning catcher Patrick Bailey from the San Francisco Giants. In exchange, the Giants receive the 29th overall pick in this year's draft and left-handed pitching prospect Matt Wilkinson.
Bailey, 26, was a first-round pick out of N.C. State in 2020 and burst onto the major league scene in 2023. He has since established himself as one of baseball's premier defensive catchers, earning National League Gold Glove honors in each of his first two full seasons. Widely regarded as the best pitch framer in the game by multiple metrics, Bailey also boasts elite pop times and a knack for gunning down would-be base stealers with remarkable efficiency.
However, Bailey's bat has been a different story. So far this season, he's struggled mightily at the plate, hitting just .146/.213/.183—good for a 16 OPS+—with 22 strikeouts in 89 plate appearances. While that sample is small, his career numbers (.230/.287/.340, 78 OPS+) suggest he's never been an offensive force. Still, the Guardians are betting on his glove to anchor their defense.
Cleveland had been relying on the duo of Bo Naylor and Austin Hedges behind the dish. Hedges has actually posted solid offensive numbers early on, but his track record suggests a regression is likely. Naylor, meanwhile, was hitting just .143/.200/.238 and has been optioned to Triple-A following the trade. With the Guardians sitting atop the AL Central at 21-19, they're clearly looking to shore up a key position for a playoff push. The Giants, languishing in last place in the NL West at 15-23, are taking a longer view with this deal.
