The basketball world is mourning a profound loss. Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has passed away at the age of 29, his agency, Priority Sports, confirmed in a social media post on Tuesday. No cause of death has been released.
Drafted 21st overall by the Grizzlies in 2019, Clarke spent his entire six-year NBA career in Memphis. From the start, he looked like a steal. In his rookie season, he averaged 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds, finishing fourth in Rookie of the Year voting. Though he never became a full-time starter, Clarke thrived as a high-energy spark off the bench. His impact was so consistent that he even earned a down-ballot vote for Sixth Man of the Year during the 2021-22 season.
That promise led the Grizzlies to lock him up with a four-year, $52 million extension in 2022. But injuries derailed what looked like a rising career. Clarke tore his left Achilles late in the 2022-23 season, limiting him to just six games the following year. He battled back, but the 2024-25 season saw him post a career-low 8.3 points per game before a PCL injury sidelined him for the final 12 games.
After offseason knee surgery, Clarke managed to return for just two games in the 2025-26 season before a calf injury ended his campaign. Away from the court, he made headlines in April following an arrest in Arkansas, but the focus now is firmly on the life and career of a player who gave everything to the game.
For Grizzlies fans and basketball lovers alike, Brandon Clarke will be remembered as a relentless competitor and a key part of Memphis's rise. Our thoughts are with his family, teammates, and everyone who wore the Beale Street Blue alongside him.
