The Grand Rapids Griffins have evened the score. After a hard-fought battle, they shut out the Manitoba Moose 2-0, tying their best-of-five playoff series at one game apiece.
It was a standout afternoon for Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, who delivered a goal and an assist to lead his team to victory. "This was a team effort," Brandsegg-Nygard said. "Everyone was playing hard."
The goaltending duel was the story of the game for the second straight day. Griffins netminder Michal Postava was flawless, stopping all 30 shots he faced, while Manitoba's Domenic DiVincentiis made 32 saves on 34 shots. After a busy first period where the Moose fired 14 shots, the Griffins tightened up defensively, holding them to just 16 shots over the final two periods.
The breakthrough came late in the first period. With the Griffins on the power play, Brandsegg-Nygard found the back of the net with just 2:56 left, thanks to a slick setup from Sheldon Dries and John Leonard. "Dries fed me an incredible pass," Brandsegg-Nygard explained. "So it made it easy for me to tap it in back door."
William Wallinder, who scored just two goals during the regular season, added an insurance marker with a little over five minutes remaining. His shot deflected off a Moose defenseman's stick and past DiVincentiis, making it 2-0.
The Griffins entered the playoffs as one of the AHL's top teams, having finished with the second-most points in the league. They were among three division winners who dropped their series openers after first-round byes, but they've now reset the stage. With the next three games at home, Grand Rapids has a golden opportunity to take control. Game 3 is Wednesday, followed by Game 4 on Friday. A decisive Game 5, if needed, is set for Saturday.
"We just have to keep our heads up before we shoot and find the holes," Brandsegg-Nygard said of facing DiVincentiis again. "He's pretty good, but in my opinion, we've been getting good shots."
