The Grand Rapids Griffins are making a power move as they push deeper into the AHL Calder Cup playoffs, adding another Detroit Red Wings prospect to their already stacked roster. On Monday, the Griffins announced they've signed forward Noah Dower-Nilsson to a professional tryout (PTO), signaling their intent to keep the championship dream alive.
This signing raises eyebrows—and concerns—about the health of top prospect Nate Danielson. Danielson is sidelined with a lower-body injury, suspected to be a hip issue, and his absence is a significant blow to Grand Rapids' playoff hopes. Dower-Nilsson's arrival provides crucial depth, especially down the middle, as he can play both wing and center. He's the seventh Red Wings draftee to join the Griffins since late in the 2025-26 AHL season, joining a wave of young talent that includes goalie Trey Augustine, defenseman Anton Johansson, and forwards Eddie Genborg, Jesse Kiiskinen, Dylan James, and Kienan Draper.
Some of these fresh faces are already making an impact in the postseason. Johansson has skated in two playoff games, while Genborg has appeared in one. The Griffins and the Manitoba Moose are currently locked in a 1-1 tie in their best-of-five Central Division semifinal, setting the stage for an intense series. The action shifts to Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids for Game 3 on Wednesday, Game 4 on Friday, and, if needed, Game 5 on Saturday—all with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
Dower-Nilsson, 21, brings impressive credentials from across the Atlantic. He signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Red Wings on April 4, which kicks off in the 2026-27 season. Fresh off a standout campaign with Frolunda in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), he tallied 16 points (6 goals, 10 assists) with a plus-seven rating in 48 regular-season games. He added 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists) in 6 SHL playoff outings and even helped Frolunda capture the 2025-26 Champions Hockey League title, chipping in 2 assists across 12 games.
For Griffins fans, this is more than just a roster move—it's a statement. With Dower-Nilsson in the mix, Grand Rapids is loading up for a deep playoff run, and the energy in Van Andel Arena is about to hit a new level.
