Griffins Back in Charge of AHL Playoff Series

The Grand Rapids Griffins have stormed back to seize control of their American Hockey League playoff series, delivering a commanding 4-2 victory over the Manitoba Moose in front of a roaring crowd of 7,581 at Van Andel Arena. With this win, the Griffins now hold a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-five matchup, putting them one step closer to advancing.

The energy in the arena was electric, marking the team's largest home playoff crowd since 2019. Leading the charge was Detroit Red Wings prospect Carter Mazur, who lit the lamp twice, showcasing the kind of offensive firepower that makes him a name to watch. Veteran NHL defenseman Erik Gustafsson also made his presence felt, contributing a goal and an assist to fuel the Griffins' attack.

But the real story of the night—and the series—has been the goaltending of Michigan Postava. The Detroit prospect has been nothing short of sensational, allowing just three goals across the first three games. His shutout streak of 101 minutes and 48 seconds was finally broken late in the third period by Manitoba's Mason Shaw, but Postava's composure under pressure has been a game-changer. If you look at his playoff résumé, it's even more impressive: dating back to Game 7 of the Czechia League Final last season, Postava has surrendered only three goals in his last four playoff contests. He backstopped Kometa Brno to a Czech League title with a 3-0 shutout in that decisive game, then blanked Manitoba 2-0 in Game 2 of this series. His lone blemish came in a 1-0 loss in Game 1, where he allowed just a single power-play goal.

The Griffins struck first in the opening period, with Jakub Rychlovsky scoring while being checked to the ice to make it 1-0. Mazur then added to the lead with a gritty effort, knocking the puck out of mid-air and firing it into the Moose net for the team's third goal. Grand Rapids dominated the first period, outshooting Manitoba 11-6, with prospect Michael Brandsegg-Nygard registering three of those shots. The team did suffer a blow, as Eddie Genborg remained sidelined due to an injury sustained earlier in the series.

Gustafsson extended the lead to 2-0 early in the second period, sneaking a long shot past Manitoba goaltender Domenic DiVincentiis at the 4:41 mark—a goal that came just as the Moose were building momentum. The Griffins' defense held firm, and Postava continued to stand tall when it mattered most.

Counting both the regular season and playoffs, Postava has now played 28 games for the Griffins, and he has yet to allow more than three goals in any of them. In fact, he's held opponents to two or fewer goals in 22 of those outings. With performances like these, he's making a strong case to compete for a spot on the Red Wings' roster next season.

The Griffins now have a golden opportunity to close out the series on Friday night at Van Andel Arena in Game 4. If Postava continues his stellar play and the offense keeps clicking, Grand Rapids could be punching their ticket to the next round in front of another fired-up home crowd.
