Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, but they face stiff competition from two Premier League rivals in what promises to be a thrilling summer transfer saga.

The Red Devils are primarily focused on revamping their midfield, but a new backup goalkeeper has unexpectedly become a priority. Current No. 1 Senne Lammens has been a revelation since his £18.1 million move from Royal Antwerp last summer, delivering a standout debut campaign that has made fans forget the erratic performances of Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir. Both are expected to leave—Onana on loan at Trabzonspor won't return, and Bayindir has reportedly agreed terms with Besiktas. With veteran Tom Heaton now serving more as a coach, securing a reliable No. 2 is crucial.

Enter Gregor Kobel. The 28-year-old Swiss international is a surprise target, according to German outlet Fussball Daten. United have held "exploratory talks" with his camp, with Dortmund demanding a fixed fee of €50-55 million (£43-48 million). Dortmund boss Niko Kovac considers Kobel "unsellable" due to his towering 6'5" frame, on-field quality, and leadership in the dressing room.

That unique profile—a commanding goalkeeper with vast experience and a winning attitude—makes Kobel an ideal fit for the Premier League. Chelsea and Newcastle United are also admirers, with the Magpies holding initial talks, while unnamed Serie A clubs lurk. For United, landing Kobel would be a statement signing, adding depth and competition to a position that's suddenly in the spotlight.
