In a major move that signals a new chapter for both programs, Greg Tipps has stepped down as Loretto's boys basketball coach to take the reins of the women's basketball program at the University of Tennessee Southern.
After nine seasons at the helm of the Loretto Mustangs, Tipps leaves behind a legacy that any coach would envy. His high school coaching career is nothing short of legendary, boasting two TSSAA basketball state championships and an impressive 493 career victories. That win total was built across stops at Coffee County, Dickson County, Moore County, and Stone Memorial before his championship run at Loretto.
The UT Southern Firehawks made the announcement on May 12, signaling their commitment to building on recent success in the NAIA ranks. "I'm incredibly honored and excited to become the next head women's basketball coach at UT Southern," Tipps said in a news release. "This program has already established itself as one of the rising programs in the NAIA, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to build on that success."
Tipps didn't hesitate to credit those who made the transition possible. "I want to thank Brandie Paul and the administration for believing in me and my vision for this program. My family and I are excited to join the Firehawk community and get to work."
For Loretto, the departure marks the end of an era that saw the program reach the pinnacle of Tennessee high school basketball. For UT Southern, it's a statement hire that brings proven championship pedigree to the women's side. As the basketball world turns its attention to this transition, one thing is clear: Coach Tipps knows how to win at every level.
