The Scarlet Knights are not ready to name a starting QB just yet.

Rutgers football fans, get ready for some suspense—the Scarlet Knights' quarterback battle is heating up, and head coach Greg Schiano isn't rushing to name a starter. In a recent appearance on the Big Ten Network, Schiano shed light on the ongoing competition between AJ Surace and Dylan Lonergan, confirming that the decision is far from settled.

"It's still playing out," Schiano said. "People say, 'well you know, you haven't made a decision.' And it wasn't because neither performed. It was because both performed."

This isn't new territory for Rutgers, which has a history of drawn-out quarterback battles under Schiano. The one exception came when Athan Kaliakmanis transferred from Minnesota and was quickly named the starter, allowing Gavin Wimsatt time to transfer. Now, with Kaliakmanis heading to the NFL, the Scarlet Knights are searching for their next leader under center.

Surace, an in-state product, has been with Rutgers since committing out of high school and has spent two seasons learning the system. Lonergan, a former four-star recruit who initially committed to Alabama, brings experience from Boston College, where he made nine starts last season. He threw for 2,025 yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions, completing 66.9% of his passes.

"I think they both performed at a pretty high level," Schiano noted. "I'd say something for Dylan, because he came in and this is a new system for him. AJ Surace has done a really good job the last two years, learning the system, becoming part of the program, and they're going to compete."

The competition will extend through summer workouts and into training camp, with no firm timetable for a decision. Schiano has a history of waiting until game week to announce his starter, but he could reveal the choice at any point during camp. "At some point, Coach Ciarrocca and myself will make a decision," Schiano said. "I trust Kirk, really, to do everything offensively. He runs the program on that side of the ball and he and I will sit down."

For now, Scarlet Knights fans will have to stay tuned—and maybe grab some fresh Rutgers gear while they wait for the big reveal.
