In a major shift for SEC softball, Commissioner Greg Sankey has opened up about the historic decision to move the conference tournament to a neutral site for the first time in over two decades. Starting in 2027, a four-year deal will bring the tournament to Toyota Field in Madison, Alabama—home of the Rocket City Trash Pandas—marking a bold new chapter for the sport.
Back in 2023, Sankey was a firm advocate for keeping the tournament on campus, citing the conference's top-tier facilities. But fast-forward to this week's Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame event, and the Commissioner struck a different tone—quickly noting that the final call wasn't his alone. "The folks in the Huntsville area pursued us aggressively," Sankey explained on Monday. "They hosted a multiple-team event a little over a year ago to show what could be done in a baseball stadium for high-level competition. It's pretty central for our teams to access."
This pivot is a notable departure from Sankey's earlier stance. In 2023, he had floated Oklahoma City's Devon Park as a potential neutral-site contender, praising its size but questioning whether other venues could match the quality of SEC campus stadiums. "The Oklahoma City facility is a much, much larger place," he said at the time. "I would never say no, but are there a lot of facilities outside that one that rise to the level of what's on our campuses?"
Now, Sankey acknowledges that SEC teams already have their sights set on Oklahoma City for the Women's College World Series. "Our teams know they're going to be in Oklahoma City, or have confidence they're going to be there," he said. "The Big 12 Tournament has a contract there." The Big 12 has typically used shorter-term, rolling agreements to keep its tournament at Devon Park—a venue that has hosted the WCWS since 1990 and will also serve as the Olympic softball site in 2028, adding a layer of complexity to any conference move.
For SEC softball fans, this shift to Madison promises a fresh, centralized experience—and a chance to see the conference's best talent compete in a brand-new setting.
