Recruits asked one key question on their transfer visits this offseason.

This offseason, the Wisconsin Badgers navigated a busy transfer portal cycle, and according to head coach Greg Gard, one question kept popping up from recruits: "Are Austin Rapp and Nolan Winter coming back?"

It all started with a slow first week in the portal, as the Badgers carefully evaluated the market for top targets. Early departures from John Blackwell and Aleksas Bieliauskas raised some eyebrows about the team's potential roster strength. But Wisconsin quickly answered those doubts by securing three transfer commitments in the following week—filling key holes and building a roster with intentional chemistry.

First came Australian point guard Owen Foxwell, then George Washington guard Trey Autry, Miami (OH) wing Eian Elmer, and Hofstra center Victory Onuetu. But it wasn't just about landing talent; it was about the right kind of talent.

Gard revealed that during the recruiting process, each of these transfers specifically asked about the status of Rapp and Winter. "They wanted to play with them," Gard said. "One of the perimeter players told us, 'You guys have the best shooting front line coming back in the country in terms of how they can stretch the floor.'"

That observation speaks volumes about today's game. When you've got big men who can shoot from deep, it opens up driving lanes, creates space, and makes everyone around them better. Gard drew a comparison to Nick Boyd, who thrived with all that room to operate. "Good players complement other good players, and they want to play with each other," he added.

The beauty of recruiting from the transfer portal is the maturity these players bring. They're not freshmen figuring things out—they're experienced athletes who know exactly what they need around them to succeed. And for the Badgers, the answer was clear: a frontcourt that can stretch the floor and a roster built on unselfishness and spacing.

It's a strategy that's paying off, and one that should have Wisconsin fans excited for what's ahead.
