Green Bay added a Y tight end in Luke Lachey, an ask many fans had for the team coming out of the draft

The Green Bay Packers have responded swiftly to fan demands, adding two players off waivers just hours after asking supporters which position groups needed strengthening. The team has claimed tight end Luke Lachey and cornerback MJ Devonshire, filling out their roster completely. These moves come after tight end Eni Falayi failed his physical and kicker Brandon McManus was released, creating two open spots.

For fans who have been clamoring for a Y tight end since the draft, Lachey's arrival is particularly noteworthy. The 2025 seventh-round pick out of Iowa spent his entire rookie season on the Houston Texans' practice squad. As a former Hawkeyes team captain, he brings a pedigree that runs deep—he's the son of former All-Pro offensive tackle and Arena Football League owner Jim Lachey. Lachey posted a Relative Athletic Score of 7.42 out of 10.00, ranking 346th out of 1,338 tight ends evaluated from 1987 to 2025.

According to The Athletic's Dane Brugler, Lachey operated primarily as a Y tight end in Iowa's pro-style scheme, lining up inline on 63.8 percent of snaps and in the slot on 29.4 percent. While his college production was hampered by injuries and a limited passing attack—he recorded zero touchdowns over his final two seasons—Brugler notes that Lachey catches the ball cleanly and is willing to do the dirty work in the run game. He's described as more smooth than explosive, but efficient in and out of breaks, making him a reliable underneath target.

Lachey will now compete with Drake Dabney, Messiah Swinson, and RJ Maryland for a backup role in Green Bay's tight end room. With the roster now full, all eyes will be on training camp to see which players earn their spots in the Packers' 2026 plans.
