The Greenville Drive came out swinging Tuesday night, racking up 15 hits and staging a spirited late-game rally, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Greensboro Grasshoppers' explosive innings in an 11-9 loss at First National Bank Field. The opener of this six-game series had all the drama you'd expect from a high-stakes minor league showdown.
Greenville (13-15) jumped out to a 5-3 lead after four innings, looking poised to control the game. But Greensboro (17-11) answered with authority, unleashing a five-run fourth inning and a three-run sixth that shifted the momentum entirely. The Drive kept fighting, bringing the potential tying run to the plate in both of the final two frames, but the Grasshoppers' bullpen held firm.
Isaiah Jackson was the star of the Drive offense, delivering a spectacular 4-for-5 performance with three RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. He wasn't alone in the hit parade: Yoeilin Cespedes added three hits, Henry Godbout crushed a home run while scoring three times and driving in two, and Freili Encarnacion went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
The Drive struck first in the second inning against Greensboro starter Hung-Leng Chang. Jackson singled to center, swiped second base, and advanced to third on Mason White's double to shallow right. Encarnacion then grounded out to bring Jackson home, putting Greenville up 1-0.
Greensboro answered immediately in the bottom half when Tony Blanco Jr. launched a solo homer to right-center off Alex Bouchard, knotting the game at 1-1. It was a sign of the back-and-forth battle to come.
Greenville reclaimed the lead in the third with a four-hit inning. Godbout singled up the middle, Cespedes followed with a single to shallow center, and Gerardo Rodriguez loaded the bases with a single to left-center. Jack Winnay brought Godbout home with a sacrifice fly, and Jackson ripped an RBI single to right-center to score Cespedes, making it 3-1 Drive.
The Grasshoppers tied it again in the bottom of the third after Matt King reached on a throwing error, Wyatt Sanford singled, and Edward Florentino delivered an RBI single to right. Easton Carmichael then grounded out to short, scoring Sanford to level the game at 3-3.
Godbout put the Drive back on top in the fourth. After Justin Gonzales reached on a fielding error by Blanco Jr., Godbout crushed a two-run homer to left field on an 0-1 pitch—his fourth of the season—pushing Greenville ahead 5-3.
But Greensboro answered with the decisive blow in the bottom of the fourth, erupting for five runs to take control. The Grasshoppers' lineup proved relentless, and despite Greenville's best efforts, the early lead slipped away in a game that showcased both teams' offensive firepower.
