Grant Napear's comeback tour in Sacramento radio has hit an unexpected buzzer-beater—and not the good kind. After just eight months back on the air, the longtime Kings broadcaster announced Monday that his weekday afternoon show on Fox Sports Radio Sacramento has been canceled.

The show, which aired from 3 to 6 p.m. on iHeartMedia's Fox Sports Sacramento, launched in September 2025 with high hopes. For Napear, it marked his first return to the Sacramento airwaves since a tumultuous 48-hour period in June 2020 that saw him lose both his TV and radio gigs. In a social media post, Napear broke the news to his followers: "BREAKING NEWS: I was just informed they are pulling the plug on my show. My thanks to you for your support and @RyaninSactown who did a great job." He also invited fans to join him for a livestream on YouTube and X later that evening.

Napear's fall from grace was swift and dramatic. He had been the television voice of the Sacramento Kings since 1988 and a dominant force on KHTK radio for decades. But a June 2020 Twitter exchange with former Kings star DeMarcus Cousins changed everything. When Cousins asked for Napear's thoughts on Black Lives Matter, Napear replied, "ALL LIVES MATTER…EVERY SINGLE ONE!!!" The response sparked immediate backlash. Former Kings players like Chris Webber and Matt Barnes publicly called him out, NBC Sports California distanced itself from his comments, the Kings announced his resignation, and KHTK fired him on air. Napear remained unapologetic about the substance of his tweet, and a subsequent discrimination and wrongful termination lawsuit against KHTK was dismissed.

Before that controversy, Napear's afternoon show on KHTK had dominated the Sacramento market for years, and his 32-year tenure as the Kings' TV voice made him one of the most recognizable sports media figures in the city. When he returned to Fox Sports Sacramento, he was determined to reclaim that throne, telling the Sacramento Bee he was "competitive" and eager to reconnect with local fans. But the station was a newer player in the market, competing directly against established rivals—and ultimately, the comeback fell short.

For fans of Sacramento sports radio, Napear's departure closes another chapter in a story that once seemed unshakeable. Whether he'll find a new platform to share his takes remains to be seen, but for now, the mic has gone silent.
