Multiple Detroit Red Wings prospects are gaining playoff experience in the AHL

The Grand Rapids Griffins are back in action, and the stakes couldn't be higher. After a well-earned week off, the top-seeded Griffins are set to host the Chicago Wolves in Game 1 of the Central Division Finals on Thursday, May 14, at Van Andel Arena. This best-of-five series is a golden opportunity for several Detroit Red Wings prospects to gain invaluable playoff experience, and the excitement is building.

The Griffins enter this round with a 3-1 record in the Calder Cup playoffs. After earning a first-round bye, they dropped the opening game against the Manitoba Moose but roared back to win three straight, closing out that series on May 7. Now, they're rested and ready for a new challenge.

All eyes are on Carter Mazur, a third-round pick from 2021 who has been on fire. After appearing in eight games with the Red Wings this season, he's leading the Griffins with four goals and five points, thanks to back-to-back two-goal performances. Meanwhile, veteran Erik Gustafsson—who didn't quite find his stride in Detroit—has been a steadying presence on the blue line, chipping in with four points in four playoff games.

Young prospects are also stepping up. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, the Wings' first-round pick in 2024, has two goals and an assist, while Axel Sandin-Pellikka (a first-rounder in 2023) has added a goal. For fans of the Red Wings' future, this series is a must-watch.

The Wolves, however, won't be pushovers. They're led by Ryan Suzuki—brother of Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki—who has four goals and six points in five games. Bradly Nadeau, a Hurricanes first-round pick, has a team-high four assists. In net, Michal Postava has been a revelation, posting a 1.25 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage, stopping 86 of 91 shots. The 24-year-old free agent from Czechia has earned the starting role and will be a tough test for the Griffins' offense.

The series schedule is set: Game 1 and Game 2 are in Grand Rapids, before shifting to Chicago for Game 3 on May 19. If needed, Game 4 is May 21 in Chicago, with a decisive Game 5 back at Van Andel Arena on May 23. For Red Wings fans, this is prime time to see the next generation of talent battle for a championship.
