Multiple Detroit Red Wings prospects are gaining playoff experience in the AHL

The Grand Rapids Griffins are back in action, and the stakes just got higher. After a well-deserved week off, the No. 1 seed Griffins are set to host the second-seeded Chicago Wolves in Game 1 of the Central Division Finals on Thursday, May 14, at Van Andel Arena. This best-of-five series is a golden opportunity for several Detroit Red Wings prospects to gain invaluable playoff experience—and for fans, it's a chance to see the future of the franchise in action.

The Griffins have been on a roll, boasting a 3-1 record in the Calder Cup playoffs so far. After earning a first-round bye, they dropped the opening game against the Manitoba Moose but rallied to win three straight, clinching the series on May 7. Now, with momentum on their side, they're ready for the next challenge. Game 2 follows on Saturday, before the series shifts to Chicago for Game 3 on May 19. If needed, Game 4 is set for May 21 in Chicago, with a potential Game 5 back in Grand Rapids on May 23.

All eyes are on Carter Mazur, a third-round pick from 2021 who made a brief eight-game stint with the Wings this season. Mazur is leading the Griffins in playoff scoring with four goals and five points, and he's been on fire with back-to-back two-goal performances. Meanwhile, veteran defenseman Erik Gustafsson—who may not have lived up to expectations in Detroit—has found his groove in Grand Rapids, contributing four points in four playoff games. His leadership has been a steadying presence for the young squad.

The prospect pipeline is shining bright. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, the Wings' first-round pick (No. 15) in 2024, has two goals and an assist, while Axel Sandin-Pellikka (No. 17, 2023) has added one goal. For the Wolves, Ryan Suzuki—brother of Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki—leads the way with four goals and six points in five games. Bradly Nadeau, a Hurricanes first-rounder, has a team-high four assists among five points.

In net, the Griffins have found a reliable option in Michal Postava, a free agent signee from Czechia. Postava is 3-1 with a stellar 1.25 goals-against average (second in the AHL playoffs) and a .945 save percentage, stopping 86 of 91 shots. He stepped up after Sebastian Cossa, the Wings' first-round pick from 2021, struggled earlier in the postseason. For fans tracking the Wings' future, this series is a must-watch—it's where tomorrow's stars are forged today.
