The Grand Junction Tigers are roaring into the second round of the Colorado state playoffs after a commanding 3-0 victory over the Coronado Cougars. The Tigers' offense came alive late in the first half, setting the tone for a dominant performance that had fans on their feet.
Lucy Burton was the spark the Tigers needed. With seconds ticking down before halftime, she collected a pass near midfield, weaved through defenders, and calmly chipped the ball over the goalkeeper to give Grand Junction a 1-0 lead. It was a momentum-shifting moment that energized the entire team.
"Everybody was feeling a bit nervous," said Beck Sharp, reflecting on the team's early jitters. "But we knew based on our record that we would come together, at least in the second half."
The Tigers proved Sharp right. Early in the second half, Evelyn Brown corralled a loose ball and fired a shot that was initially saved, but the rebound popped out to Sharp, who was waiting at the side of the net. With ice in her veins, Sharp buried it to double the lead.
"What’s going through my head is don’t look at the keeper," Sharp explained. "As soon as I look at the keeper, it’s going right to her. So I just kept my eye on the ball, made sure I didn’t look at her and placed it anywhere else."
Brown capped off the scoring later in the match, converting for the Tigers' third goal. The defense held firm from there, securing the clean sheet and advancing Grand Junction to the next round.
The Tigers now await the winner of Dakota Ridge and Windsor, with a second-round matchup set for Saturday. If their playoff debut is any indication, Grand Junction is ready to compete at the highest level—and they’ve got the gear to match. Whether you’re hitting the pitch or cheering from the stands, make sure you’re dressed for victory.
