In a heartfelt announcement that rippled through Texas high school basketball circles, legendary coach Jeff Bell has officially retired from his roles as Graford's boys basketball coach and athletic director. The Bell family shared the news via Facebook over the weekend, marking the end of an era for the Jackrabbits program.
"Coaching at Graford has been one of the greatest honors of my life," Bell wrote. "I am incredibly proud of what our players, coaches, and community accomplished together over the years." His tenure was nothing short of historic, highlighted by back-to-back state championships in 2022 and 2023—the first state titles in school history. Those victories, along with multiple Regional Final appearances, cemented Graford's place on the Texas basketball map.
Bell's coaching legacy extends beyond Graford. The four-time state champion also led Brock to two state titles in the early 2000s, showcasing his ability to build powerhouse programs wherever he went. "More important than wins and championships are the relationships built along the way," Bell reflected. "Watching young men grow into successful adults has been the most rewarding part of this profession."
With over 1,000 career wins—a milestone he reached in 2024—Bell's resume is staggering: 24-time Coach of the Year honoree and a Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) Hall of Fame inductee. In his final season (2025-26), Graford reached the 2A Div. II regional finals, falling to eventual state champion Lipan.
But the Jackrabbits aren't slowing down. Graford ISD announced Monday night that Bo Rickner will succeed Bell as athletic director and head coach. Rickner brings 19 years of coaching experience, including six as a head coach. Most recently, he led Paradise to a 3A Div. II state championship this past season, earning TABC Region Coach of the Year honors. His background also includes a 12-year stint as an assistant under Zach Boxell at Brock—a program Bell knows well.
As one chapter closes, another begins. For Graford fans, the transition from a legend to a rising star promises to keep the Jackrabbits' winning tradition alive and well.
