The Seattle Seahawks made a savvy move this week by signing veteran EDGE Dante Fowler Jr. to a one-year contract. General Manager John Schneider had been on the hunt for an experienced pass rusher this offseason, and he's landed a quality one in Fowler. This addition comes at a crucial time as the team looks to bolster its defensive line depth.
Head coach Mike Macdonald's defensive philosophy relies on rotating pass rushers to keep pressure fresh and consistent. The Seahawks recently lost Boye Mafe to free agency, who logged the third-most snaps among Seattle's EDGE players last season with 561, trailing only DeMarcus Lawrence (626) and Uchenna Nwosu (583). That's a significant void to fill, and Fowler steps in as a proven option.
Interestingly, the Seahawks didn't select a single pass rusher during the 2026 NFL Draft, making the veteran market a priority. Schneider wisely shifted focus there, finding a familiar face in Fowler. He previously teamed up with Lawrence on the Dallas Cowboys in 2022-23, and Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde coached both players during his time in Dallas. That existing chemistry should smooth Fowler's transition into Seattle's system.
According to Pro Football Focus, Fowler recorded 30 pressures and three sacks last season—solid production for a rotational player. Beyond replacing Mafe's snaps, the Seahawks may also look to lighten Lawrence's workload to keep him fresh for the long haul. Fowler's arrival helps accomplish both goals, giving Macdonald more flexibility in his defensive rotations.
With his familiarity with Seattle's scheme and a chip on his shoulder, Fowler looks like an excellent fit for Macdonald's aggressive, rotation-heavy approach. This signing could pay dividends as the Seahawks aim to strengthen their pass rush in the upcoming season.
