The Gophers football program scored a major recruiting victory on Sunday, securing a commitment from four-star linebacker Tate Wallace out of Iowa City. The 6-foot-2, 226-pound standout from Regina Catholic High School chose Minnesota over a star-studded list of finalists that included Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Arizona State, and Arizona.
Wallace, who also participated in the prestigious Navy All-American Bowl, held an offer from Iowa State but notably not from in-state rival Iowa. His commitment adds significant firepower to Minnesota's 2027 recruiting class, where he now ranks as the third-best prospect among the Gophers' 13 pledges, trailing only Kindred, N.D. tight end Brooks Bakko and Wayzata defensive lineman Eli Diane.
In the state of Iowa, Wallace is considered the second-best overall prospect, and he joins fellow Hawkeye State standout Will Clausen, a Cedar Rapids offensive lineman, in Minnesota's recruiting haul. This is a strong statement for the Gophers' ability to pull top talent out of Iowa.
Wallace is far from a one-sport athlete. He also excels on the basketball court, baseball diamond, and track and field. On the gridiron, he showcased his versatility by also playing tight end for a Regina Catholic team that went 12-1 and reached the Class 1A state championship game in November. In that big game, he hauled in a 36-yard touchdown catch, proving his big-play ability.
As a junior, Wallace was a force on both sides of the ball. Defensively, he racked up 50 tackles, 9 sacks, and three forced fumbles. Offensively, he was just as productive, catching 40 passes for 611 yards and 10 touchdowns. This kind of two-way production is rare and signals a player with elite athleticism and a high football IQ.
The Gophers are building serious momentum on the recruiting trail, and Wallace's commitment is a key piece of that puzzle. For fans looking to rep the next generation of Gopher stars, this is a name to remember.
