Good Morning San Diego: Padres start with a bang, end with a fizzle against Giants

News to know about your San Diego Padres and MLB for May 5, 2026.

The San Diego Padres kicked off their series against the San Francisco Giants with a flash of promise, but ultimately fell short in a 3-2 loss that left fans wanting more. Jackson Merrill ignited the offense with a first-inning solo home run, giving the Padres an early 1-0 lead. But after that initial spark, the bats went cold for much of the night.

Randy Vasquez took the mound for San Diego and delivered a solid outing, but the Padres' offense couldn't provide enough support. The three runs allowed by Vasquez and Luis Arraez proved to be the difference, as San Francisco capitalized on key moments. Arraez, now with the Giants, led the charge with two doubles and two runs scored against his former team.

Merrill was the lone bright spot for the Padres until the ninth inning, finishing 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Ramon Laureano gave fans a glimmer of hope with a solo home run to lead off the top of the ninth, cutting the deficit to 3-2. But the rally fizzled as Fernando Tatis Jr. struck out for the third time, Merrill grounded out, and Manny Machado went down swinging on a check swing to end the game. In total, the Padres managed just three hits—all from Merrill and Laureano—and struck out 10 times without drawing a single walk.

San Diego will look to bounce back in Game 2 of the series, set for a 6:45 p.m. start. The team needs to find its offensive rhythm quickly if it hopes to keep pace in the competitive NL West.

Meanwhile, speculation is growing that the Padres may part ways with veteran Nick Castellanos. According to Thomas Conroy of Gaslamp Ball, the slugger was brought in to provide power, but his bat has yet to heat up. With the season moving along, San Diego may not have the luxury of waiting for him to find his groove.

On a brighter note, the Padres managed to salvage their series against the Chicago White Sox with a win at Petco Park. Griffin Canning started that game and, while he didn't get a decision, his performance was a highlight of the week, per Cheri Bell of Gaslamp Ball. The Padres have since added Canning to their rotation, while Luca Giolito continues to build up in the minors before joining the big-league club.

Finally, Mason Miller earned National League Reliever of the Month honors for the second straight month, a testament to his dominant work out of the bullpen. As the Padres look to turn things around, they'll need more consistent contributions across the board—from the lineup to the rotation.
