Good morning, Illini Nation! Get ready to welcome a familiar face back to Champaign. Tom Michael, a name etched in Illini basketball history, is returning to the University of Illinois as deputy athletic director—the No. 2 administrator in the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics. He officially steps into this role starting May 14, bringing with him a legacy that began on the court over three decades ago.
Michael first arrived in Champaign ahead of the 1989-90 season as part of a standout recruiting class for legendary coach Lou Henson. While the class was headlined by the iconic Deon Thomas—a Simeon star who became a program legend—Michael carved his own path. He joined fellow recruits like De La Salle teammates Tim Geers and Brooks Taylor, along with Christopher standout T.J. Wheeler, forming a group that would help shape Illini basketball in the early '90s.
What set Michael apart was his impressive high school pedigree. Standing 6-foot-8 as a forward, he led Carlyle to a Class A state championship with a dominant tournament run. Once the action reached what was then Assembly Hall, Michael was virtually unstoppable. He averaged a staggering 32.7 points on 76 percent shooting, including a 45-point explosion in the semifinals against Prairie Central. In the championship game, he poured in 28 points on 10-of-12 shooting to lead Carlyle to a 65-56 victory over Rock Island Alleman.
After redshirting the 1989-90 season—when frontcourt minutes were largely claimed by Marcus Liberty, Andy Kaufmann, Rodney Jones, and Ervin Small—Michael emerged as a key role player for the Illini over the next four seasons. His breakout campaign came as a redshirt sophomore in 1991-92, when he started every game and posted career highs in scoring (12.5 points per game) and rebounding (4.6 per game) while playing 30.9 minutes per night. That season, he shot an incredible 49.3 percent from three-point range, a mark that still stands as Illinois' single-season record. His career three-point percentage of 44.9 percent also remains at the top of the Illini record book—a testament to his sharpshooting prowess.
Now, as he returns to Champaign in an administrative role, Michael's journey from state champion to Illini standout to athletic department leader is a story that resonates with any fan of Illinois sports. Whether you remember his clutch shooting from the early '90s or you're excited about his new chapter behind the scenes, one thing is clear: Tom Michael is back, and Illini Nation is ready to welcome him home.
