Apr. 19—Kylan Boswell closed out his week in Portsmouth, Va., with his best day at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament.
The 6-foot-2 Boswell not only had the sixth-best vertical of the 64 players tested at 32 1/2 inches, but his 6-8 wingspan (plus-5 1/2) is a major positive.
After two close losses to start the tournament, Boswell helped his team post a 130-88 victory on Saturday. The Illinois guard never matched his scoring from game one (20 points), but his third game was his best all-around performance with 11 points, 13 assists and four steals.
Leaning in to his "floor general" mode after that 20-point performance helped Boswell land on the all-tournament team Saturday. The Champaign native averaged 11.7 points, 10.3 assists, 3.7 steals and two rebounds in three games.
As far as first steps in the pre-draft process go, consider the week in Portsmouth a success for Boswell. Was it a performance good enough to put him in line for an invite to the G League Elite Camp that runs May 8-10 in Chicago as a precursor to the NBA draft combine? We'll see.
Boswell currently ranks No. 66 on ESPN's draft board, but should rise when it's updated to reflect the players returning to college basketball. That makes him borderline late second-round pick, but the results from Portsmouth and the rest of the pre-draft process could get his name called in June.
