Apr. 21—Sometimes my worlds covering Illinois basketball and football collide. Like at the Final Four, where I spotted Illini safety Mac Resetich in the Orange Krush wearing a No. 15 Jake Davis jersey.
"I've actually never met Jake Davis, but, obviously, I always see all the stuff on social media about our hair," Resetich said Monday afternoon at the Smith Center when I caught up with him for the first time since the Final Four. "Every time I walk through campus everyone thinks I'm Jake Davis. He's a little bit taller than I am."
Resetich was a multi-sport standout at Spring Valley Hall. In addition to playing football, he was a top 500 prospect nationally in baseball and a 1,000-point scorer on the basketball court.
His basketball background made the Final Four that much more enjoyable.
"I played basketball in high school, but I didn't really take it too serious," Resetich said. "I was just really good at it. As a kid, you didn't really know what you wanted to play growing up. If it ended up being basketball, (the Final Four) was something I would always watch as a kid hoping to play in. Seeing that first hand, it was a crazy atmosphere. They were playing in a football stadium, which is just ridiculous how many people were there."
Resetich at least dressed the part at Lucas Oil Stadium to fit in cheering with the Orange Krush.
"I actually went and bought a Jake Davis jersey because everybody thought I was Jake Davis," he said.
