The 2004-05 Illinois Fighting Illini team that captivated the nation with their run to the NCAA championship game continues to be celebrated. When the Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame launched its inaugural class in 2017, it was no surprise that two of the most dynamic stars from that Final Four squad—Dee Brown and Deron Williams—were among the first inductees. Their electrifying play and leadership defined an unforgettable era for Illini basketball.

Now, a third key member of that legendary team is set to join them. James Augustine, the steady and powerful forward who anchored the frontcourt, will be inducted this September as part of the 10th Hall of Fame class. He’ll be enshrined alongside seven other former Illini standouts, including recent star Ayo Dosunmu.

“I was surprised,” Augustine shared on a recent SportsTalk appearance. “Josh Whitman called me a month or two ago and told me the news. I was honored. I was excited to hear the news. You have Ayo and six other members going in that are great. It’s an honor for me, especially to go in with so many legends and the student-athletes that have gone through the program. I’m excited about it.”

Augustine’s impact on the program is undeniable. Over four seasons in Champaign, he averaged 10.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, providing a reliable presence in the paint. But his legacy extends far beyond college. After being drafted by the Orlando Magic, Augustine carved out a lengthy professional career that saw him shine both in the NBA and, most notably, as a EuroLeague star for multiple top European clubs. Standing at 6-foot-10, he remains Illinois’ all-time leading rebounder—a testament to his consistency and tenacity on the boards.

For fans who remember that magical 2004-05 season, Augustine’s induction is a fitting tribute to a player whose hustle and skill helped write one of the most memorable chapters in Illini basketball history.
