The District 6 baseball playoffs are officially underway, kicking off Thursday with teams from across Spokane and the region battling for coveted spots in the state tournaments. Here's a breakdown of the brackets and key matchups to watch as the action heats up.
Class 4A: Three Teams Headed to State
Gonzaga Prep (17-4) may have finished second in the Greater Spokane League standings, but they earned the league's top seed for districts thanks to an alternating seed agreement with the Mid-Columbia Conference. The Bullpups are the No. 2 seed overall and will host seventh-seeded Chiawana (12-9) on Saturday. The winner advances to face either third-seeded Kamiakin (16-4) or sixth-seeded Lewis and Clark (7-14) in Tuesday's semifinals.
Top-seeded Richland (20-1), the state's highest-ranked team according to RPI, awaits the winner of Thursday's play-in game between Pasco (4-17) and Mead (7-14). Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Ferris (11-9) will host fifth-seeded Hanford (12-8) in another first-round showdown. The district championship and third-place games are set for May 16.
Class 3A: University Leads the Pack
GSL champion University (19-2, No. 3 RPI) is the top seed and will host the winner of Thursday's play-in game between Shadle Park (6-14) and Walla Walla (5-13). That winner then faces the survivor of Saturday's matchup between fourth-seeded Southridge (12-9) and fifth-seeded Ridgeline (13-8).
On the other side of the bracket, second-seeded Kennewick (16-5, No. 5 RPI) hosts seventh-seeded Central Valley (6-15), while third-seeded Mt. Spokane (14-7) takes on sixth-seeded Hermiston (9-11). The district championship and third-place games also take place May 16.
Class 2A: West Valley Eyes the Prize
First-round games are Friday, with semifinals Tuesday and the championship on May 15. Third-seeded Deer Park (10-11) hosts sixth-seeded Rogers (1-18), with the winner advancing to face second-seeded Pullman (15-4). On the other side, fourth-seeded Clarkston (10-11) hosts fifth-seeded East Valley (5-15) for the chance to play top-seeded West Valley (18-2, No. 5 RPI).
With only four teams in this district, they'll compete in two three-game series to determine who reaches the district championship at Shadle Park on May 16. Both finalists will earn state berths.
Class 1A: Lakeside and Colville Lead the Way
League champion Lakeside (14-6, No. 3 RPI) hosts fourth-seeded Riverside (2-14), while second-seeded Colville (14-7, No. 6 RPI) welcomes third-seeded Medical Lake (14-7) in doubleheaders on Saturday. If necessary, Game 3 for both series would be Tuesday.
