Basketball fans, mark your calendars. Gonzaga and Duke—two of college basketball's most iconic programs—are set to collide in a must-see nonconference showdown this February at Detroit's Little Caesars Arena.
Scheduled for Feb. 20, this clash brings together perennial powerhouses with a history of thrilling matchups. For Gonzaga, it's a chance to test itself against one of the sport's biggest brands, while Duke continues its high-profile partnership with Amazon Prime Video, which will broadcast the game alongside the Blue Devils' battles with UConn and Michigan.
This isn't just any regular-season game. Little Caesars Arena holds special meaning for Gonzaga—it's where the Zags' Sweet 16 run ended in 2024 against Purdue. Now, they return to the same floor with a chance to make a statement. And with the Final Four set for nearby Ford Field less than two months later, both teams will be eyeing a potential return trip to Detroit in April.
The financial stakes are impressive too. According to CBS Sports' Matt Norlander, each of Duke's opponents will earn north of $500,000 for their participation, with Duke receiving an even larger share as the primary organizer. Tipoff time and ticket details are still to come.
This game adds even more firepower to what's shaping up to be Gonzaga's most challenging nonconference schedule in years. The Zags open their season on Nov. 2 against Purdue in Las Vegas, then hit the road for tough tests at Kentucky and Creighton. A neutral-site battle with Michigan State awaits on Dec. 19 in Palm Desert, California, followed by another trip to the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas, where Mark Few's squad will likely face three more high-major opponents.
Gonzaga's schedule also includes a potential neutral-site series with Oregon and a new two-year series with UCLA, though details are still being finalized. All told, the Zags are guaranteed at least eight games against high-major competition next season.
This will be the sixth all-time meeting between Gonzaga and Duke, but the first since Jon Scheyer took over as Duke's head coach in 2022. Their last matchup came in 2021, when Chet Holmgren's Zags fell 84-81 to Paolo Banchero and the Blue Devils in Las Vegas. Before that, Gonzaga's Rui Hachimura and Brandon Clarke delivered an 89-87 thriller to win the Maui Invitational, topping a Duke squad featuring Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett, and Cam Reddish. And in 2015, Duke stopped Gonzaga one win short of the Final Four.
With history, star power, and Final Four implications on the line, this February showdown in Detroit is shaping up to be one of the season's most anticipated games. Stay tuned for ticket and tipoff announcements.
